Fall 2011
In 2010, 16 Volunteers lived in 3 intentional, Christian communities located in Duran and the surrounding suburbs of Guayaquil, Ecuador. These young graduates from the US, volunteered over 12,500 hours throughout the course of 12 months working with Ecuadorian partners to serve and be with the people of Ecuador...
Fall 2011
Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves...don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them...
Spring 2011
The kids here never cease to impress me. I mean, of course kids will be kids...they can do things and make decisions that make me want to scream...but their genuine grace in accepting their responsibilites and circumstances awes me...

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
Winter 2011
Careful! Careful! I heard from outside of the dusty red bus as it bounced in and out of the potholes in Duran. I looked out the window to see that the pleas of caution were coming from three imaginative children, playing on the road in the neighborhood of Ventiocho de Agosto. It was around 11:00, the sun was slowly rising...
Fall 2010
Ricky’s jacket was slung over my right shoulder, a reminder of the generosity, warmth, and sincere human care that I encountered in the Christ-like people of Ecuador. Looking upon the faces of people like my friends from Hijo de David, I have looked upon His face...
Fall 2010
In September of 2009, Rostro de Cristo volunteers began working in this new community and ground was broken to build volunteer house as part of Centro Tomas in memory of former board member, Tom McDermott...
Fall 2010
Everyone has heard variations of the theme: “In these economic times, things are difficult.” With both the national and international economic situation unstable, small not-for-profit foundations such as ours have to work even harder to make ends meet...
Fall 2010
In 2009 Rostro de Cristo volunteers began working in Mt. Sinai and ground was broken on a new community house in memory of former board member Tom McDermott. This past August Fr. Ronan visited Mt. Sinai to give mass, bless Casa Tomas and welcome the 2010-2011 community of volunteers.
Spring 2010
The kids of Semillas care and are very perceptive. They notice when something happens to one of us, when we are tired or preoccupied and they ask how we are. I say this because when I first noticed it surprised me and made me realize how much they care about me...
Spring 2010
I recently spent a week with a group of girls from Dominican Academy with whom I became very close – the energy they brought and the care and concern they showed for the people was evident; I could tell that it was hard for them to realize how people live here and the struggles they face but I know that they will share this experience with others...
Fall 2009
The Rostro Reunion and retreat took place at the bucolic and comfortable Rolling Ridge Retreat Center located just north of Boston with 28 alumni volunteers and 2 alumni in-country directors, plus special guests: in-country director Megan Radek and Rostro de Cristo friend, partner and inspiration, Pat McTeague, who flew in from Ecuador to be with the group for the weekend..
Spring 2009
There are moments in life when we are presented with a course of action that is so clearly right and good that it takes on a life of its own and one is swept up in its power. Often times these opportunities appear within the context of tremendous sadness or grief. Such is the case for the Rostro de Cristo community...
Spring 2009
Driving in the dark across the bridge into Durán my eyes search around for any familiar sights. My memory is working overtime recognizing the humid slightly fishy smell off the river, hearing the honk as cars pass the van, and feeling my head hit the ceiling as we roll over a speed bump...
Spring 2009
As the RdC After-School Programs (ASPs) enter their 8th year, having become a staple to the work that we do in Ecuador, it is hard to imagine a time in which we did not have these programs. For many, they have come to embody what RdC is all about..
Spring 2009
Our job as Rostro de Cristo Volunteers running our after-school programs is to reinforce what is taught in school, as well as provide the one-on-one attention that public schools cannot give in their crowded classes. We work to move beyond the basics that are taught in school and do our best to create opportunities for our kids to use their imagination and build a love for critical thinking. We are lucky to have at our disposal the PAl curriculum...
Winter 2009
We are so sad today. We know you didn’t want to leave us so soon and we are so reluctant to let you go. But our faith compels us to believe that however tragic your loss for us you are in a much better place where you still feel our love and still send us yours back...
Fall 2008
It was fleamarket day at Padre Damien's Hansen hospital a day where all the resident patients get to spend some oftheir loose change they've earned selling arts and crafts to visitors at a clothing boutique set up by the foundation. Ryan had enlisted Owen, Mary, Erica and I to help sort and organize the clothes...
Fall 2008
So there we were sitting around the table after eating a deliciously prepared meal at the Rostro de Cristo AJS house. With a full belly, we all felt lucky it wasn't Owen's night to cook. Owen was notorious for his poorly planned meals but I'll save that for another story...
